Energy Innovation Zones (EIZs) are an adaptation of a well-established model for transformational change in economies and systems where risks need to be managed carefully.
In this paper, which takes stock of developments in the UK and West Midlands over the past two years, I argue that they offer a nuanced and flexible approach to energy systems transition in the UK. The time is right to institutionalise EIZs as a powerful and useful mechanism within the UK energy governance framework.
